Cienfuegos , fairly identified as the South Pearl, has become one of the better preserved cultural attractions in Cuba , especially if we take into consideration that since 2005 the historic centre of this southern city enjoys the privilege of being listed among the places that have been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
The area that was so honoured by this renowned United Nations Organization extends over 70 blocks, including the exact place that served as a starting point for the founding of the villa on 22 April 1819 by French settlers. The well known South Pearl is, therefore, the only Cuban city founded by representatives of said European nation.
